New Zealand Energy Use

The following data has been extracted from the 2020 New Zealand MBIE energy balance spreadsheets using the Python Pandas library. The data shown spans from 1974 to 2019, with the exception of components of the gas consumption data which is missing up to 1990.

One can observe in the left most chart that while New Zealand has a fairly clean electricity grid, this only makes up a small portion of total emissions (measured in kT CO2 equivalent), approximately tied second place with the manufacturing and construction sector.

The largest contributor to CO2 emissions is domestic transport, which comprises around 85% of all oil consumption and growing.
